Transparência Algorítmica carried out an unprecedented mapping of Artificial Intelligence technologies in use by public authorities in 2020 and analyzed, in partnership with organizations, possible risks to privacy, rights and civil liberties in these tools. It also produced a multisectoral assessment framework for the use of AI by the state to contribute to the monitoring of public oversight bodies and civil society.

The survey within the federal executive branch was carried out using a questionnaire developed jointly with the Office of the Comptroller General (CGU), the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and the Center for Studies on Web Technologies (Ceweb.br) at NIC.br. The questionnaire was sent by the CGU to the 319 bodies under its purview, receiving more than 200 responses, and via the Access to Information Law to the Legislative and Judicial bodies at federal level and to the Federal Court of Auditors.

In addition, with the support of Northwestern University, the initiative developed an automated search algorithm on official federal government portals for mentions of the use of AI systems. Thus, in addition to identifying the technologies in use, a model was created for civil society to monitor new AI contracts.
