Mais Defensoria project aims to increase access to justice by improving the transparency of public defenders’ offices and identifying data gaps in their internal governance. Improving data collection and management, as well as the transparency of the work of Brazilian public defenders’ offices, are crucial steps to strengthening these essential bodies and guaranteeing access to justice, especially for the most vulnerable citizens who need them.

Mais Defensoria works on two fronts:

1. Action: Evaluate electronic portals of each public defenders’ office on the level of transparency of eligibility criteria for citizens to access their services.

Objective: to identify measures that can be taken to improve transparency and guarantee easy access of the population to the justice system.

2. Action: development of materials and tools aimed at improving transparency and information management, to be adopted by all public defenders’ offices in the country.

Objective: to promote the creation of inputs on citizen service so that public defenders’ offices can measure, analyze and strategically improve their practices.

With the work of Mais Defensoria, the public defenders’ offices will be able to analyze their priorities, identify bottlenecks in service, and provide a more concrete basis for any demands for more funds.
The initiative is in partnership with the State’s Public Defenders’ Offices and their own Ombudsmen’s Offices, the National Council of Ombudsmen of Public Defenders’ Offices and the National Council of General Defenders (CONDEGE).
