Tá de Pé was a grassroots mobilization project to monitor the progress of nursery schools and schools financed by the federal government’s National Education Development Fund (FNDE) throughout Brazil, with the aim of providing civil society with a means of monitoring the execution of educational infrastructure projects and demanding greater accountability from public authorities.
Initially launched as an app, Tá de Pé allowed any citizen to access a list of nearby school buildings and anonymously send photos and information about the work to Transparência Brasil. Together with partner specialists, the team determined whether there were signs of delays or stoppages in the work, which were then alerted and questioned by the institutions.
Subsequently, the monitoring tool was transformed into a Twitter profile (X), to which users could send images of school construction work, and into a WhatsApp chatbot, to which citizens could enter their municipality, receive a list of paralyzed construction work nearby and provide information about the construction.
The methodology served as a reference for the Citizen Works Task Force, a tool developed by the Federal Court of Auditors in partnership with the Brazilian Social Observatory, which trains volunteers across the country to identify problems in school construction and record the information in the Citizen Union app.
